I had the pleasure of working with Harold “Mick” Crocker with the Queensland Main Roads Department at Darra Depot Brisbane back in the 1980s Mick was a contract carter owner driver who started work in the late 1940s as a young man in his teens. Mick and his offsider would shovel by hand 6 tons of river sand twice a day and then deliver it in his cable winch tipper can you imagine any human being doing this today. Mick often told stories of his footballing days with Brisbane South’s ,and his stint with Parramatta. But his greatest stories was when he played for Australia and Queensland. Mick stated that the Pommy forwards were the hardest he ever played against ,although he declared that the French teams of the 1950s were more superior in attack than any international teams he ever played against.
