Brothers’ forward, Steve Carter fronted the Brisbane Rugby League judiciary panel, his right arm in plaster and his face a mess following a wild brawl in the Brisbane Woolies pre-season final against Wynnum-Manly at Lang Park.

Carter was charged with a kicking offence during the brawl and was banned for eight games. He had been dismissed by Test referee, Eddie Ward who testified that the kicking offence occurred during the brawl, which took place in front of the Frank Burke Stand five minutes from fulltime.

There was a dramatic postscript to the match – won 32-10 by Wynnum – with Carter admitted to hospital that night after he collapsed back at Brothers Leagues Club, Grange. He was kept in hospital overnight for observation.

Easts’ secretary, Brian Smart revealed coach, Wayne Lindenberg had been registered as a player so he could fill in as a reserve if any player became ill on the flights to Biolela and Townsville in the first two weeks of the State League. Lindenberg, a former State halfback, was the star of the Tigers’ 1983 Grand Final win over Redcliffe.

In England, Easts’ forward, Trevor Paterson turned in his best performance since joining Leeds, as the ‘Loiners’ defeated Wigan 36-18 at Headingley. Paterson scored two tries, one from his own neat kick ahead, and also played a big hand in another try.

Wests Panthers’ centre, Tony Currie also had a splendid game for Leeds, after he was cleared to play followed a successful night at the judiciary following his dismissal in a match 10 days earlier. Currie played five eighth and marked Parramatta star, Brett Kenny, who was having an off-season stint with Wiagn.

“Currie’s keen tackling completely eliminated Kenny,” wrote the Yorkshire Evening Post’s, Trevor Watson. Leeds’ Parramatta winger, Eric Grothe scored his 11th try in 12 matches, but was taken off soon after halftime following a kick in the back.

Brisbane Valleys’ prop, Keith ‘Cow’ Neller scored a try for Halifax in their 22-2 win over Hull, with current 2025 Brisbane Souths’ chairman, Bob Hudson at halfback for Halifax. St Helens, boasting Brisbane Souths’ stars, Mal Meninga and Phil Veivers, defeated Warrington 30-28 in a thriller.

British Test centre, Ellery Hanley scored his seventh hat-trick of the season for Bradford Northern in a big win over Leigh, taking his season try tally to 42. Easts’ centre, Brett Tengdahl came off the bench for Northern.
