STEVE RICKETTS, recently retired Chief Rugby League writer for ‘The Courier-Mail’, has built this website as part of his on-going involvement with a game he covered (in one form or another) in a journalistic career extending back to 1971.
In his first four years in journalism he was required to file reports on the games in which he played for Brothers in the Group 18 – Gold Coast competition. He also filed a weekly sports column for ‘The Daily News’.
When he moved to Brisbane in 1975 he filed stories for the Brisbane Rugby League program, while working as a general reporter for ‘The Telegraph’.
He moved to sport full-time in 1981, and has covered every league season since, including
– The 1982 and ’86 Kangaroo tours;
– Queensland Residents’ tours of New Zealand and France in 1988 and ’89 respectively;
– The Kangaroos’ 1996 visit to Papua New Guinea;
– The 1999 Tri-Nations in New Zealand;’
– The 2000 World Cup in Britain;
– The 2004 Tri-Nations in Britain;
As well as all domestic international and State of Origin series, Brisbane, Queensland Cup, NSWRL, ARL, Super League and NRL grand finals.
In 1990 and ’94 he led Kangaroo Supporters Tours to Britain and in 1998 and 2002 led special interest tours through Europe and Britain, with French League history a big part of the ’98 trip.
In 2011 Steve delivered the second annual Harry Sunderland Address, titled ‘the French Connection’, which marked the 60th anniversary of the first French tour of Australia.
Steve continues to be involved in Rugby League as a member of the QRL History Committee, which has as its main long term goal the establishment of a Queensland Rugby League Museum.
He also has organised a Supporters Tour to the 2013 World Cup in Britain, with the group to depart Brisbane on October 31.
