Gil MacDougall
New South Wales’ representative centre, Gil MacDougal scored three tries for Western Suburbs Magpies in their 25-5 win over Riverina Division in a State Cup game played at Wagga Showgrounds.
McDougall, the father of former Test winger, Adam ‘Mad Dog’ MacDougall, had the big country crowd applauding his penetrating dashes.
Wests were a fearsome outfit in 1965 with Test winger/centre, Peter Dimond the really big name in their backline. A reserve for the Magpies was future Test five eighth, Dennis Pittard, who played for Australia from South Sydney.
The Magpies’ pack included prop/second rower, John Armstrong, who later played for Wests in Brisbane and is still fondly remembered by the Panthers’ faithful. Another forward was John ‘Chow’ Hayes, who went on to manage Australian sides.
The Riverina side included giant prop, Barry Beiber, while the hooker was Milton Whybrow from Harden-Murrumburrah. Whybrow later represented Toowoomba in the inter-city Bulimba Cup competition in Queensland, while Beiber played for Central Qld. Milton was my captain-coach at Brothers Murwillumbah in 1974 guiding us to play-off for fourth spot in the 11 team Group 18/Gold Coast competition. We were beaten by Surfers Paradise Pirates in the play-off at Murwillumbah Oval.
Riverina’s coach in 1975 was former New Zealand Test back, George Menzies.
