FLASHBACK: February 1986

February, 1986: The Australian Rugby League gave permission for players to exempt themselves from representative football, within certain guidelines. Players had to be over 28, have given “valuable service to the game” and had to make their application to the ARL before the start of the season. In 1985 Brett Kenny and Steve Mortimer withdrew from a short tour of New Zealand and were barred from playing club football until the Kangaroos returned. Don Furner was appointed Australian Test coach for 1986, replacing Terry Fearnley, while Wayne Bennett was named Queensland coach for the State of Origin series, replacing Des Morris who was to coach Brisbane in the Panasonic Cup.
