Redcliffe’s formidable pack was the talk of the pre-season in Queensland with Bryan Niebling (Valleys) and Brad Tessman (Souths) having been lured to the peninsula to play under the coaching of John Barber.
Fellow representative stars, Paul Khan, Shane Bernardin, Richie Poulsen and Wally Fullerton Smith were already on the Dolphins’ pay roll, and the club had retained the services of veteran, Vic Tighe and signed Dave Trewhella from Newcastle. Trewhella would go on to play for Australia from the Sydney Roosters.
Redcliffe president, Dick ‘Tossa’ Turner was quite happy for his club to wear the big spenders tag, and to be labelled ‘the Manly-Warringah of Sydney’.
“We have no intention of lowering our standards to theirs (the other clubs),” Turner said.
Iris Dempsey became the first woman to sponsor a major rugby league club when her business, Metal Accessories, backed the Souths’ Magpies.
Dubbed ‘The Iron Lady’, Iris even helped design Souths’ new jersey.
