Ipswich club, Tivoli, coached by former international, Dan Dempsey, boasted they were as good as any team in Australia after beating champion Brisbane side, Valleys 7-2 at the Brisbane Exhibition Grounds.
Tivoli five eighth, Peter Robertson, 19, scored the only try of the match, forcing his way across the line 13 minutes from full time, despite the desperate efforts of two defenders. Lock and skipper, Col Thornton was heavily involved in the lead-up work.
Thornton, a former Queensland captain, tipped international honors for Robertson.
“My tip is he will make the Australian 13 within the next two seasons,” Thornton said. “I am the only old player in the Tivoli team. Dan Dempsey has coached the side into what I believe is the best club team in Australia.”

Tivoli halfback, Harry Linde thrived on the domination of his forwards in the match against Valleys, and was a menace around the scrum base. Tivoli’s defence curtailed the attacking brilliance of Valleys’ prolific try scoring winger, Len Kenny.
Footnote: Robertson played six matches for Queensland, but never represented Australia.
