Brisbane premiers, Easts, scored a convincing 27-6 win over North Sydney in a fourth round Amco Cup (knockout) competition match at Lang Park, scoring five tries to one against the hapless Bears.
Easts’ halfback, Wayne Lindenberg was man of the match, with his speed and elusiveness too much for the Bill Hamilton coached Norths. ‘Lindy’ scored a try, set up two more and kicked six goals. Lindenberg was pushed for the award by hooker, Johnny Lang; second rower, Des Morris and lock, John Abbott.
The North Sydney team included former Gold Coast Tigers and Brisbane Wests’ forward, Pat Kelly.
In the Amco Shield curtain raiser, Warwick High School from the southern Darling Downs, defeated Brisbane’s Kedron High 27-10.
The touring New Zealand Kiwis enjoyed wins over Toowoomba and Central Queensland in the early part of July. They thrashed CQ 40-2 in Rockhampton, with Olsen Filipaina and Ian Bell scoring two tries each.
But they had to fight all the way against Toowoomba, only sealing victory (18-13) in the last minute, with a runaway try to centre, Warren Winter, with Nick Wright landing the conversion. Penalties favored the home side 16-8.
