It may have been a more relaxed time in the early days of the Broncos, but superstars like halfback, Allan Langer still had plenty of pressure.
There was the pressure to perform, and there was the pressure to inter-act with the fans.
As you can see from this photo, that is not always easy.
I think we know why field invasions are frowned upon. Even easy going ‘Alfie’ looks under duress here.
The Broncos’ inaugural season was 1988, and they won their first premiership in 1992. They made it two in a row in 1993.
Trevor ‘The Axe’ Gillmeister, played in both those premiership sides, but there was no room for him in 1994, so HE headed to Sydney to sign with Penrith.
Gillmeister’s first match in Penrith colors was a trial in Mackay against a local selection, which included Steve Bella, a younger brother of Test prop, Martin Bella.
While ‘Gilly’ was heading north, his former Broncos’ teammates were on a five day promotional visit to New Zealand, where Alfie was mobbed. Rumor has it, he was even asked for his autograph by an All Black.
