The professionalism of Brisbane rugby league clubs came under the microscope after an amazing jersey stuff-up involving Easts Tigers ahead of a Winfield State League match against Gold Coast Vikings at Owen Park, Southport.

Easts were forced to play in gear borrowed from the Beaudesert Kingfishers who had played in a curtain raiser. A Tigers official collected the wrong laundry bag on the morning of the match leaving behind the club’s special Kentucky Fried Chicken-sponsored jerseys and all the side’s socks and pants.

The mix-up went undetected until 50 minutes before kick-off.

While it was an honest mistake, the Queensland Rugby League were not amused and Easts were fined $1,250, which amounts to ….in 2026. “We have to protect the interests of our sponsors,” said QRL Managing Director Ross Livermore.

Beaudesert – I mean Easts – belted the Vikings 40-10 with lock Brett Le Man and winger Mick Taylor scoring two tries each. The other try scorers were Bruce Crosby, Trevor Lucas and Darryl Schmith. Cavill Heugh kicked three goals and Ian Stains one.

Hooker Wayne Marshall was one of Easts’ best but finished with a worrying ear injury. Marshall was deputising at hooker for the injured Max Sahl.

Vikings coach Peter Inskip described his team’s performance as “poor all round” even though they only trailed 14-10 at halftime. “We missed too many tackles and they (Easts) are not even a very good side,” he said.

Forward Keith Gee, a Beaudesert product, was Gold Coast’s best.

Easts were looking forward to welcoming back fullback James Sandy from England. Sandy was one of the stars of Castleford’s 15-14 win over Hull Kingston Rovers in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.
