Leeds to test Storm

England’s Super League can be viewed on Euro Sport here in Australia with two live games each weekend.

The matches covered in round 1 were Leeds v Hull and St Helens v Huddersfield and I thought the standard was pretty good.

Leeds were impressive in their 36-6 win over Hull (6-6 at halftime) and I give them an excellent chance of beating the Storm in the World Club Challenge.

Former Broncos halfback, Brett Seymour had a shocker for Hull, his handling in particular bringing groans from the large band of supporters who travelled to Headingley from Humberside.

St Helens (beaten 40-4) were woeful against a fired up Huddersfield outfit looking to lower the colours of the Merseyside club now coached by Australian, Nathan Brown, who was at Huddersfield last season.

A minute’s silence was observed before the match for former St Helens and Great Britain forward, Dave Chisnall, who played in the infamous 1970 ‘Battle of Brisbane’ at Lang Park, a match in which rival props, Cliff Watson (GB) and Jim Morgan (Aust) engaged in a vicious head butting duel.

Chisnall also toured Australia with the 1975 England team, playing in another brawling match at Lang Park, this time against Wales. (A World Cup round robin was held in the northern and southern hemispheres in ’75).
