Brian Burke

brian_burkeBest wishes to former sports editor of ‘The Courier-Mail’, Brian Burke who retired last week and was farewelled by friends at a function at Brisbane’s Queens Arms Hotel.
Brian has been a Swans (AFL) fan all his life, but also has a soft spot for grassroots rugby league in Brisbane given his father-in-law was the late Neil Groom, a staunch Wests man, who ‘converted’ to Brothers when his son became a fan of The Fighting Irish.
Neil gave me the chance to write for the BRL programme back in 1978 when I returned from England, and I maintained a link with the magazine until my retirement last year.
The first player I interviewed for the mag was Wests prop, Johnny Young who insisted we meet The Treasury Pub for the interview.
I shouted lunch and a few drinks, and there wasn’t much change left from the $25 I was paid for the article. I did future interviews over the phone.

One response to “Brian Burke

  1. Steve, I liked the link between Brothers and the mighty Wests Panthers. The great rivalry continues ,,,,at least in the juniors with Panthers Under 11s just getting home over the Brethren at Gibson Pk last Sunday’
