Graham Murray took Leeds to a Challenge Cup triumph over London Broncos at Wembley in 1998, and I’m sure he will be remembered by those at the new Wembley on August 24 when Wigan play Hull.
It’s always good to have teams from different counties involved on the big day and to have Wigan from Greater Manchester (Lancashire in broad terms) and Hull from the Humberside (Yorkshire) is a promoter’s dream.
I have been to one Challenge Cup final – in 1978 when Leeds played St Helens – and I have not experienced an atmosphere like it since, State of Origin included.
There were 98,000 there that day with Leeds winning 14-12 in a thriller.
Andy Gregory remains a Wigan favourite, 25 years after he won the Lance Todd Trophy as Wigan’s man of the match in their Challenge Cup win over Halifax.
My money is on Wigan fullback, Sam Tomkins to be Lance Todd winner this year.
