Queensland Country, coached by Toowoomba’s John McDonald, scored a rousing 16-14 win over Sydney club, Newtown in a Amco Cup match at Lang Park.
And the bush boys did it the hard way, tackling themselves into the ground in the last quarter when Newtown had all the ball.
Ipswich five eighth, Ray Kelly was named man of the match, winning a $1400 video cassette recorder as a result.
Kelly was pushed all the way by Newtown five eighth, Ken Wilson who scored two tries.
But the try of the match was scored by Ipswich halfback, Larry Brigginshaw who raced 40 metres after a sweet off-load by giant prop, Peter McNamara.
One worrying feature from the game, from a Queensland perspective, was new state fullback, Colin Scott’s handling woes under the high ball.
The Newtown team included Tweed Seagulls products, Mick Ryan and Steve Hage, as well as former Brisbane Brothers hooker, Barry Jensen.
