TEST centre, Alex Watson played one of the best games of his illustrious career in Wests 32-17 win over Norths in a Brisbane Rugby League semi-final at the Exhibition Grounds.
Watson scored 15 points from three tries and three goals, and every time he handled the ball he had fans in the crowd of 7,000, on their feet.
Norths, led in the forwards by Stan Hassum, displayed plenty of grit, but they had no-one in the backline who could contain Watson.
Wests overcame the loss of prop, George Vautin (father of future Test lock, Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin) to a head injury in the second half, with Panthers’ hooker, Johnny Flynn winning the scrums 22-10 against Stan Holdsworth.
Vautin’s co-prop, league legend, Duncan Hall made a number of powerful runs, and finished with a try of his own.
Norths goal kicker, Rae Johnstone missed all four conversion attempts, and handed the role to Ray Waldon, who was successful with his lone shot.
Johnstone had practised his kicking for two hours at Oxenham Park, Nundah 24 hours earlier.
“I think I left it all at Nundah,” Johnstone said after the match.
